Where Croatia is geographically: Croatia stretches from the eastern edges of the Alps in the north-west across to the Pannonian plains and the banks of the Danube in the east. The central part of Croatia covers the Dinaric massif, and its southern part ends on the shores of the Adriatic Sea. Size: The land mass covers 56,542 square metres, and Croatia’s territorial waters comprise 31,067 square kilometres. Population: 4,43746 inhabitants. By ethnic origin, the majority are Croatians, and the ethnic minorities consist mainly of Serbs, Slovenes, Hungarians, Bosnians, Italians and Czechs. Political structure: Croatia is a republic based on multiparty parliamentary democracy. Capital city: Zagreb (779,145 inhabitants) is Croatia’s administrative, cultural and academic hub. Length of the sea shore: 5,835 kilometres - of which 4,058 km are beaches, rocks and reefs. Number of islands, islets and reefs: 1,185. Krk and Cres are the largest islands. 50 islands are uninhabited. Highest peak: Dinara, 1,831 metres above sea level. Climate: There are two climatic zones in Croatia. Inland the climate is mainly continental, although in parts it is mountainous and the climate varies accordingly. The Adriatic coast enjoys a pleasant temperate Mediterranean climate with a lot of sunshine throughout the year, and a hot dry summer. The best time to visit Croatia: Staying in Croatia is pleasant from April to October. During the summer season the temperature is generally around 38 degrees, while the sea temperature is a pleasant 26 degrees. |
