Jelsa
JELSA·
Jelsa is situated in the middle of the north coast of the island of Hvar. The settlement is concentrated by the sea while the hinterland is surrounded by dense pine woods on the sloping hills of the island's ridge. Jelsa is the only place on the island with an abundance of fresh water, which is the cause of more luxuriant vegetation than in the other areas of the island.
Entering Jelsa by road one passes through the alley of poplars that leads into the town park of lush vegetation, which is a certain surprise and very much a rarity in a distinctly stony area. At first sight Jelsa appears to be a relatively new town with 19th century characteristics in its urban and architectural sense. However, one gradually discovers later on that it is an old town with a history  dating back to ancient times.

Sucuraj
SUĆURAJ·        Sucuraj is a town by the sea, situated by a deep bay and in a valley facing the sea. It is at the point where the island of Hvar comes nearest to the mainland. The distance between Sucuraj and Drvenik on the mainland is only 6 kilometres. From Sucuraj there is a wide panorama of Biokovo, Makarska and Peljesac. The town was built on two small peninsulas with a harbour, in the 15th century. From ancient times this position has had an important strategical character, as well as a role in communications with the mainland. Therefore, the continuity of cultures dating from Illyrian times is easily understood. The Hvar Statute of 1331 mentions the church of Sv. Juraj (St. George) in Sucuraj, which is where Sucuraj gets its name from. However, this does not mean that there was already a bigger settlement there, apart from some shepherds' or fisherman's dwellings. The settlement of the place was conditioned by the arrival of the Augustinians from Zaostrog who formed their monastery in the 16th century and took over the parish duties. The monastery was reconstructed in the 17th century, and now only parts are preserved, mainly the perimeter walls and a large number of architectural fragments. The town of Sucuraj is directly oriented towards fishing, fish preconditioned the direction of the economy towards fishing, fish processing, and later navigation. The population is also occupied with agriculture, wine-growing, olive and fig growing. The high quality dried figs are well known.

Brusje

The village of Brusje is situated only 6 kilometres from Hvar. The settlement was a group of shepherd's huts in the 16th century. A series of rural houses run along the road, forming a very picturesque architectural grouping. At first it was a suburb dependent on the town of Hvar. From the beginning of the 18th century it had its own church Sv. Juraj (St. George) which has a statue of the saint on the facade. On the high altar there is a painting of St. Anthony by B. Zelotti (1532-1592), which was transferred here from the Dominican monastery in Hvar.

The former inhabitants were mostly involved with cattle-breeding and agriculture, while today priority is given mostly to the cultivation and processing of lavender, which plays an important role in the island's exports.

On the way into the village, and also on the road from Brusje to Stari Grad, there are two ruins of the summer villas of Njivice and Moncirovo from the 16th century. Descending to the north coast of the island, several coves belonging to the island can be reached. After Vira, there is Jagodna, a very wooded cove, then Kosmaca, Carnica, Lozna, Tatinja and finally Grabovac. In the following cove of Lucisce, there are the remains of a villa with a preserved chapel of the noble Bertucevic. A humanist and a poet, Jerolim, and his son Hortenzije, came from this family (16th century). In the bay of Gradisce there is a prehistoric fortification from the second millennium BC. Illyrian and ancient ceramics have been found here. After Gradisce, there are the coves of Radocinol, Konopljikova and Maslinica, with the country houses of the nobles of Hvar and the families of maritime tradition

Pitve
PITVE·        the island Pitve is one of the oldest settlements of the island, owing to its exceptional strategical location under the sheer crag of Samotorac, at the entrance to the gorge of Vratnik. This has always been a natural defence and refuge from the enemy, which is the reason for its important role in the Second World War. The settlement probably originates from Illyrian times, which supposes that its name originates from Pityeia, a former name for the island. It preserved its continuity owing to its strategical position. The village consists of two parts. The newer part, called Ostrvica from the 15th century, was founded after the fall of Bosnia when the first settlers came from there. Between the old Pitve and Ostrvica there is the church St. Jakov (James) from the 19th century, built on the foundations of the old one from the 15th century. Inside the church is a head of the god Janus with two faces (Janus - the god of the door, as a symbol of protection). In the school building there is a memorial wing to the fighters of Pitve from the Second World War. On the first floor there is a museum of the National War for Liberation, the only one on, and on the ground floor there is a viticulture museum which houses the ethnographical items connected with the long tradition of wine-growing on the island.
